UNESCO supported International Year of Astronomy 2009 is a global tribute to celebrate the 400th anniversary ofuse of Telescope for observing celestial objects by Galileo Galilei.
Manthan was involved in a brilliant local initiative wherein Manthan co-developed a mobile camel cart exhibition on Astronomy which visited villages, slums and local neighborhoods in and around Ahmedabad, Gujarat under 100 Hours of Astronomy project which was observed simultaneously by countries across the globe.
It was enthusiastically received by locals, especially children, for many of whom it was their first exposure to topics such the solar system, eclipses and celebrated Indian astronomers. Hands-on activity was encouraged with 5000 solar viewers being distributed so that people could view the sun safely while being told about its various characteristics by a team of volunteer guides.
During the same year, Manthan Co-developed a special hands-on astronomy kit that had fun-activities like making a Pin hole camera, measuring the altitude of the stars being on Earth, making our own Star dial, knowing how the expansion of universe takes place with the help of balloon, knowing our weights on different planets solar viewers, observing spectrum, materials to view solar eclipse which were some modular approaches in Spreading awareness and exposing young minds to a global and one of the ancient subject ‘Astronomy’.
